Badenoch Moves to Tighten UK Citizenship Rules
UK Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has announced a significant shift in immigration policy, proposing that migrants must reside in the UK for 15 years before applying for citizenship, a substantial increase from the current six-year requirement. Additionally, migrants who claim benefits during their first decade in the UK may be barred from settling permanently. These proposals are aimed at redefining what it means to live in Britain, with a focus on integration and economic contributions.
Badenoch outlined her stance in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“I said last year that the Conservatives will come forward with a plan to fix our immigration system. Today I’ve announced the first part: that living here has to mean something. That means making bold changes to who we allow to live in Britain, and how they apply.”

Badenoch’s Broader Views on Immigration
This latest proposal aligns with Badenoch’s long-standing views on immigration. In September 2024, she asserted that “not all cultures are equally valid” and stressed the need for a robust integration strategy that reinforces British values and culture. She has repeatedly argued that the UK should not be treated as “a dormitory for people to come here and make money” but as a home where newcomers actively contribute to society.
In November 2024, she acknowledged past Conservative missteps on immigration, stating that the party had “got it wrong” and committing to a comprehensive review of immigration policies, including the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act. Her vision includes a strict numerical cap on immigration, tightened access to British passports, and a zero-tolerance approach to foreign criminals remaining in the UK.

Badenoch has also voiced concerns over the speed of immigration, arguing that it has outpaced the ability to maintain public services and integrate individuals from diverse backgrounds effectively. She believes that a more measured approach is necessary to ensure successful integration and sustainability of the UK’s public infrastructure.
Implications for Migrants and the UK
If implemented, these new policies could significantly alter the pathway to British citizenship and settlement for thousands of immigrants. The increased residency requirement and restrictions on benefits signal a shift towards a more selective and stringent immigration framework, reinforcing Badenoch’s broader stance on limiting migration and prioritising integration.
With her proposals sparking debates across political and public spheres, the coming months will reveal how these potential reforms take shape and the impact they may have on immigration policies in the UK.
