About the Africa Initiative for Governance Scholarships

From 2017 to date, AIG has been in the business of training youths to be catalysts for public sector transformation. The Africa Initiative for Governance Scholarship give five scholarships for outstanding West Africans. The Scholarship gives Nigerians and Ghanaians who are passionate about the public sector, an opportunity to pursue the Master of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford.

Upon graduation, all AIG Scholars are expected to return to their home countries and apply all they have learnt in being change agents in their country’s public sector.

About Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) 2021/22 Scholarships

The AIG Scholarships are for West African graduates who are between the ages of 25 and 50 with strong intellectual capability; leadership skills, outstanding academic achievements, and also a passion to contribute to the development of Africa’s public sector.

What is the deadline for the AIG 2022/23 Application?

The application for the AIG scholarship 2022/23 will close on Sunday, 10 October 2021

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for consideration for the award of 2022-23 AIG Scholarships, you must:

  • Be a Nigerian currently working in the civil service
  • Aged between 25 and 50 years
  • Also have a minimum of seven (7) years of work experience
  • Have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of second-class upper qualification
  • Gain admission into the Blavatnik School of Government following success in the AIG shortlisting process

Additional Requirements include:

  • Academic distinction and also leadership potential are key priorities for selection.
  • In the case of candidates with second-class upper qualifications, a Master’s, second degree or relevant professional qualification will be an advantage.
  • Only applicants shortlisted for the next stage of the selection process will be contacted and also any inquiries regarding individual application status are strictly prohibited.
  • Applications sent via post or in person are NOT acceptable.
  • Candidates who emerge as finalists in the Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) selection process will also need  to apply directly to the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, for admissions. The finalists who go through the final selection of AIG Scholars already obtains an admission to the Master of Public Policy.

The second stage of AIG Scholarships selection will require you to provide the following additional information.

Resume/Curriculum Vitae

Full Academic Transcripts

Academic and/or Professional References (four in total). Please note that at least two of the references must be from individuals whom you studied under at university.

Personal Essay (no more than 1500 words) covering the following information.

  • Why do you have an interest in public service and also public policy; Explain the specific issue(s) or problem(s) you care about. Your thoughts on how to resolve this issue and also how the resolution of this issue could impact the economy as a whole.
  • Why the AIG Scholarship and the MPP Programme at BSG-Oxford are important to you and also how you intend to utilize this opportunity.
  • The description of a personal challenge you have overcome or an achievement that you believe demonstrates your leadership potential, and also the impact of that achievement.
