Apply for the 2025 World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program

The World Bank Group’s Africa region has launched its 2025 World Bank Africa Fellowship Program. It’s open to Sub-Saharan African Ph.D. candidates and recent graduates.

This program aims to empower the next generation of African changemakers. It focuses on development research and policymaking. Moreover, it promotes poverty reduction in the region. The program targets young, talented African nationals. These individuals should be completing or have recently completed their Ph.D. Their field of study must be relevant to the World Bank’s work.

Since its inception, the fellowship has been highly successful. It has built a strong pipeline of young African talent. Young professionals in Africa have shown interest in development careers across various sectors.

Selected fellows receive a six-month assignment. They work at World Bank offices in Washington D.C. or in-country offices. This hands-on experience covers various aspects of WBG operations. Fellows engage in knowledge generation and dissemination. They also help design global and country policies. Additionally, they contribute to building institutions for inclusive growth in developing countries.

The program offers exposure to research and innovation across multiple sectors. Furthermore, fellows work on economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations. These efforts support the World Bank’s goals of eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity. This World Bank Africa fellowship program provides a unique opportunity for young African professionals to gain valuable experience. This also prepares them to make significant contributions to Africa’s development.

Full Eligibility Criteria for the 2025 World Bank Fellowship Program

  • Be a recent Ph.D. graduate (within three years of completion) or be in the last year of the Ph.D. program.
  • Have an excellent command of English, both written and verbal.
  • Possess strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Be 32 or under the age of 32 by January 2025.

If accepted, you will:

  • spend six months getting hands-on experience at WBG headquarters in Washington D.C. or a country office. The fellowship requires an in-person availability for the period January-June 2025.
  • ·work on research, economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations that contribute to the WBG’s goal of eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity.

Selection Process

Phase I: A short list of candidates will be selected and made available for hire to the different units of the WBG depending on the applicants’ field of specialization and interest. Applicants will be notified about the status of their application or whether they have been shortlisted or not.

Phase II: The final list of fellows will be selected in consultation with the various units of the WBG. When the selection is complete, all shortlisted candidates will be informed of their selection status. Selected candidates will then be notified and, upon acceptance, be hired as short-term consultants for six months starting January 2025.

Fellows are eligible to receive consultant fees and round-trip economy-class air travel to Washington, D.C. or a WBG country office.
